This page features the three assignments I did for my COM 221 (Writing Across the Media) class: Press Kit, Spot Script and Podcast Script. They represented an interesting and fun challenge. Working on these assignments ended up being enriching and uplifting. Enjoy!
For my mock press kit I decided to sponsor an event of ArciGay Roma. The event consists of a movie screening, “The Danish Girl” by Tom Hooper, followed by a discussion on transsexuality in Italian society. For what concerns my cover letter I decided to target a specific newspaper, “La Repubblica”. In my cover letter I wrote to Giuseppe Smorto, who is the Internet news editor of “La Repubblica”, with the goal of having an article written about the event.
The teenage boy feels lonely and sad, since he cannot talk to anyone about his sexual orientation; once he discovers Gay Help Line, he smiles and starts living happily.
The teenager is having dinner with his parents. While they are chatting, he is silent and has a neutral expression. Everything is colored. After a fade out, the teenager has a sad expression and a strip of adhesive tape on his mouth. Everything is black and white except for the strip, which is yellow. There is a fade out, and the location is school. The teenage boy walks alone while his other peers are chatting and laughing with one another. Everything is colored and he is walking with a neutral face. After a fade out, the boy is walking with a sad expression and holds his books in his arms. He has the same strip of adhesive tape on his mouth. Everything is black and white except for the strip, which is yellow. There is a fade out, and the teenager is in the bathroom looking at the mirror. He is looking at the reflection with a neutral face. Everything is colored. After a fade out, the boy has the strip of adhesive tape on his mouth. He tries to reach his reflection on the mirror with a sad face. Everything is black and white except for the strip, which is yellow. Then, the number of Gay Help Line appears onscreen. The teenage boy dials the number and when starts talking with the operator, he takes the strip off his mouth and everything becomes colored.
The podcast episode “The same I do” features an interview with Michela Marzano, a movie review of The Danish Girl, and a discussion on the Roma Pride 2016
The podcast “The same I do” is about LGBT issues in Italian politics. It deals with political, cultural topics in a friendly way. It wants to provide information and raise discussion on several topics. This episode is structured into three parts. The first part features an interview with the philosopher Michela Marzano. The interview is an useful opportunity to discuss her new book titled “Papà, Mamma e Gender” in relation to gender stereotypes in Italian culture; the second part is a movie review on Tom Hooper’s last film, “The Danish Girl”, which deals with the transgender cause; the third part talks about the Rome Pride 2016 and reflects on the importance of the Pride itself in Italian culture.
